What Is EXIF Metadata? Why Strip Metadata? How to View MetadataHow to Strip MetadataMetadata Best Practices

What Is EXIF Metadata?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is metadata embedded in your photos by cameras and smartphones:

Common EXIF Fields

  • Camera make/model — What device took the photo
  • Focal length — Lens setting (e.g., 26mm)
  • Aperture — Light gathering (e.g., f/1.8)
  • Shutter speed — Exposure time (e.g., 1/125s)
  • ISO — Light sensitivity (e.g., 400)
  • Date/time — When the photo was taken
  • GPS coordinates — Where the photo was taken
  • Copyright — Owner information

Why Strip Metadata?

Privacy Concerns

  • GPS location — Reveals where you live, work, or travel
  • Date/time — Shows when you were at a location
  • Camera serial number — Can identify you as the photographer
  • Copyright — May contain personal information

File Size

Metadata adds 10-100KB to each image. Stripping it reduces file size.

How to View Metadata

Step 1: Upload Your Photo

Go to the Image Metadata Viewer and upload your image.

Step 2: View EXIF Data

The tool displays all metadata fields including camera settings, GPS coordinates, and timestamps.

Step 3: Export (Optional)

Export metadata as JSON for documentation or analysis.

How to Strip Metadata

Step 1: Upload Your Photo

Upload the image you want to strip metadata from.

Step 2: Select Strip Option

Choose "Strip Metadata" to remove all EXIF, IPTC, and XMP data.

Step 3: Download Clean Image

Download your image with all metadata removed — ready for safe sharing.

Metadata Best Practices

1. Strip before sharing — Remove GPS and personal data

2. Keep originals — Preserve metadata for your own archives

3. Check before posting — Social media may preserve some metadata

4. Use for forensics — View metadata to verify image authenticity

5. Respect copyright — Don't remove copyright metadata from others' images

Frequently Asked Questions

What metadata do my photos contain?

Photos contain camera settings (aperture, ISO, shutter speed), date/time, GPS location, camera model, and sometimes copyright information.

Is it safe to share photos with metadata?

Photos with GPS metadata can reveal your location. It's safer to strip metadata before sharing publicly, especially on social media.

How do I remove metadata from photos?

Use the Image Metadata Viewer's strip function to remove all EXIF, IPTC, and XMP data from your images.
